FAQ’S on OTG (Oven, Toaster and Griller)

 What is OTG?

Commonly known as oven-toaster-griller, OTG is a small, electric oven that comes with heating rods. OTG does not use electromagnetic waves instead converts electric energy to create a high temperature to bake / Cook food. Usually it is considered to be a better option than a convection microwave for baking. But you can’t heat/defreeze food and is slower than a convection microwave oven. OTG have important features such as motorized rotisserie, convection function, timer, illuminated chamber, bypass timer and thermostatic temperature control function.

What can be cooked in OTG?

OTG will grill, bake and toast food to perfection using the heated rods and makes cooking session tireless and fun.

Any special training is required?

Not really, anyone can use a microwave efficiently. OTG are simple to use and with their simplified settings and intuitive features there is no need of mastery.

Difference between a microwave and an OTG

As discussed earlier, OTG is a small, electric oven that comes with heating rods. OTG converts electric energy to create high temperature for baking & cooking whereas microwave uses electromagnetic waves. OTG is considered to bake better than a convection microwave, but you cannot use it to heat/defreeze food. It is relatively slow than a convection microwave oven. How should I select one?

It’s very important to buy the right type of OTG that suits your requirement; otherwise you would be wasting your time and electricity. If your family consists of less number of people you can look out for OTG upto 20 litres and for an office/ restaurant one must go for higher capacity more than 30 litres.

What features should I look for in a microwave?

Automatic sensors

These are sensors which make your whether your food is cooked or not. Once the food is cooked, The OTG turns off. This function helps to avoid overcooking or burning. PS. enter the food type and quantity for the sensor to give accurate result.

Turntable

This enables the dish to rotate automatically for evenly cooking. It’s always a good idea to buy OTG that comes with turntable.

Auto defrost (I am not sure of this function)

Auto defrost makes the task of defrosting a breeze. All you need to do is enter the type of food and its weight and the OTG selects the best program for you. It will defrost all types of food like chicken or paneer, without cooking it.

Child Safety Locks

Safety Locks prevents children from operating the OTG by putting a number lock. Consider this feature only if you kids around or at home.

Shortcut keys

Most of the OTG come with auto settings for common recipes. Don’t go for it if you are not going to use it

Removable racks

Insert these racks and cook more than one food at a time. This option helps you save time and energy, especially if you are cooking in small portions.

Onam recipe – Semiya Payasam

Onam is a festival celebrated by the Malayalees. Onam starts on the day of attam nakshatram and goes on for ten days till thiruvonam

Ingredients:

Vermicelli 1 cup
Cashew nuts handful
Raisins handful
Water 3/4cup
Sugar a cup
Saffron a pinch
Milk a cup
Cardamom two or three pods

Method

  1. Heat the ghee and fry the vermicelli till light brown.
  2. In the meanwhile, boil the water. Add the vermicelli to the boiling water and cover it. Keep stirring occasionally. Once the vermicelli becomes soft , add the sugar and continue to stir. Put the saffron in the milk and dissolve it, add this milk to the vermicelli. Powder the cardamom and add it to the mixture. Then fry the cashew nuts and almonds in ghee and add these. Mix well and boil for about two minutes. Your payasam is ready and can be served hot or cold.

Ganesh Utsav Recipe: Karanji

Prepare delicious Karanjis for Ganesha right away!
Ingredients:

1 cup maida
3 tsp ghee
1 cup grated coconut
3 1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tbsp poppy seeds
chopped almonds
raisins
salt
oil
½ cardomom powder

Procedure:

Make a dough. In a bowl mix salt, maida and ghee. Add warm milk and salt to make a smooth dough.

For stuffing, cook the coconut, sugar, milk, chopped almonds and raisins, cardamom powder and poppy seeds in milk. Boil till the milk evaporates.

Divide the dough and make flat round pancakes. Add the stuffing in middle and close the corners. After stuffing all the gujias or karanji, heat oil in a frying pan.

Fry the karanjis for 2-3 minutes till the colour becomes golden brown.

Take out and place in tissue paper to avoid having extra oil. Let it cool.
